Reflection: What worked and what didn't for a surface designer

As the new year begins, I feel the pull to pause and reflect on the year that’s just passed. What worked. What didn’t. And what I’m still trying to figure out!
This past year was the first full year that I consistently documented my wins and the challenges that came up each month. Some wins were big, while others were small moments of progress that might have gone unnoticed if I hadn’t written them down. Alongside those wins, I also kept track of the challenges that often show up during times of excitement.
What made this practice especially helpful was going a step further. For each challenge, I noted the key lessons I was learning. (I will admit this took some push inside to really admit at times) Sometimes that brought clarity and simple action steps for moving forward. Other times, it was a reminder to slow down, adjust expectations first and foremost or try a different approach next time.
I also began paying closer attention to the emotions that showed up throughout the year, excitement, frustration, doubt, pride, gratitude. Seeing those emotions written out helped me see my thought patterns and gave context to both the progress and the setbacks.
Reflecting on what worked and what didn't as a surface designer
Reflecting as a surface designer and looking back has helped me see growth more clearly. It’s shown me where things are working, where patience is still needed, (a big one for me!) and how much learning happens alongside the higher moments. It’s a practice I’ll be carrying into the new year, less about perfection and more about awareness.
A Simple Reflection Tool (Free)
Because this practice has been so helpful for me, I’ve created a free Google Doc template you can use to reflect on your own year. It’s a simple, flexible space to see things at a glance...your wins, challenges, lessons, action steps, and emotions.
If it feels helpful, you can use it to:
jot down wins (big or small)
reflect on challenges and what they taught you
note gentle action steps moving forward
notice how you felt along the way
To use it, just open the link and go to File → Make a copy so you have your own private version.
This is your space no rules, no pressure. And if you feel like sharing how you’re using it or what you’re noticing, I’d truly love to hear.
